RINHEE SUBERWAL & PRAMOD KUMAR TWO WORLDS. ONE JOURNEY.

Excerpts from the conversation:

Q1. What are the modalities you are into?

Rinhee Suberwal. I am into multiple creative and healing modalities. Along with choreography and dance, I am also associated with healing, spirituality and other artistic avenues.

I believe that when you are an artistic individual, you cannot limit yourself to just one medium. I have always wanted to face the camera and pursue acting, and somewhere, because of my team and the opportunities that came my way, that dream has also started coming true.

So, I am open to exploring acting and other creative assignments along with choreography and healing.

Q2. Choreography or healing modalities — which do you enjoy more and why?

Rinhee Suberwal. Both are very close to my heart, and I don’t really believe in restricting myself to one. Choreography allows me to express myself creatively, while healing gives me the opportunity to connect with people on a deeper level and guide them. I enjoy both because they allow me to create an impact in different ways.

Q3. What is the best part of being in the same or similar profession? What are the pros and cons?

Rinhee Suberwal. One of the biggest advantages of being in the same profession is that we understand each other’s hectic schedules and professional pressures. We manage each other very well. Wherever he lags, I back him up, and whenever I lack something, he supports me.

I don’t have to explain everything to him — he simply knows. We understand each other’s moods and emotional upheavals, and that is one of the best things about being in the same profession. At the same time, the downside is that people often start comparing us, and subconsciously, that can affect a relationship.

Earlier, it used to create a lot of conflicts, but today we have learnt to handle it much better. We are both equally ambitious and have strong opinions, so differences are bound to happen. Our ultimate goal is the same, but our ways of reaching it can be very different.

Q4. What are your ambitions and dreams at this stage of your career?

Rinhee Suberwal.  Facing the camera and stepping into the world of acting has always been a dream, and it’s wonderful to see that dream gradually becoming a reality. There is a strong desire to explore more acting opportunities and take on exciting new assignments.

I don’t believe that a singer, dancer, choreographer or any artistic individual should limit themselves to one medium. If you are creative, you should allow yourself to flow into different forms of expression.

So, I am definitely open to acting opportunities along with my work in choreography and healing.

Q5. Your profession involves dealing with celebrities. How easy or difficult is it to deal with them?

Rinhee Suberwal. In choreography and healing, we do interact with a lot of celebrities. Many of them understand spirituality, respect spiritual practitioners and give us immense love and respect.

However, there are also some who may take you lightly or feel that because they have paid you, you have to listen to everything they say and create magic all the time. That isn’t how the process works.

When you are into healing, you have to be patient. Whether it is astrology or any other healing modality, everything isn’t magic. There are certain processes and remedies that need to be followed. Sometimes people can push you to a point where you feel uncomfortable because they want everything to happen their way.

But our responsibility is to guide them in the right direction and help them get into the right order. Celebrities and common people alike need to understand that they are made of blood, flesh and bones, and so are we. They need to be patient and trust their healer as a friend, philosopher and guide.

Q6. What is the vision for your dance academy in Navi Mumbai?

Rinhee Suberwal. My academy started in 2009 and, by the grace of God, continues to function successfully in Navi Mumbai. One of the biggest milestones has been my partnership with Nagendra Prasad, who is Prabhu Deva’s youngest brother. Today, people travel to our academy from different parts of India, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Rajasthan, Punjab and several other places.

Our vision is not to keep opening branches everywhere. Instead, we want to make our academy so unique and special that people are willing to travel from wherever they are to be a part of it. That is already happening. We have children from extremely privileged backgrounds as well as underprivileged children, and they all train together without any differences. That is one of the special things about our academy.

We also have supporters who help underprivileged students. It feels extremely fulfilling to contribute to society in this way. Our vision is to identify genuine talent, train people, take them across different platforms and make dance a meaningful part of their lives.

Q7. Share two secrets of a happy marriage?

Rinhee Suberwal. The first is to keep your ego aside. The second is to accept your partner the way they are instead of constantly expecting them to change. I also strongly believe that you need to heal yourself and break your own negative patterns.

Q9. What advice would you give to newcomers who want to make a career in dance choreography?

Rinhee Suberwal. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are extremely talented, in many ways even more talented than our generation. But I want them to understand the importance of consistency and being respectful towards elders. I feel basic values such as saying “sorry” and “thank you” are sometimes missing today. You are a part of society, and if you want to achieve something big, being well-groomed, disciplined and respectful is extremely important.

At the same time, they should stay away from any kind of vice or addiction. Talent is important, but consistency, discipline, character and professionalism are what help you sustain a career.

Q8. What advice would you give to newcomers who want to become healers?

Rinhee Suberwal. Whether you are a choreographer or a healer, you need to develop a thick skin because people will say whatever they want to say. As a healer, you also have to understand that the person coming to you for healing needs to respect the process and trust you. They need to look at you as a Guru, friend, philosopher and guide, and they should be conscious of their karma.

As a healer, you have to remain grounded and continue doing your work with sincerity, irrespective of what people say or how they behave.

Q9. What is your philosophy of life?

Rinhee Suberwal. Don’t play safe. Be a risk-taker and have faith in the divine. Sometimes you have to take that leap of faith and trust that things will fall into place.

Q10. Tell us about the other ventures you are associated with.

Rinhee Suberwal. We are entrepreneurs, performers and social activists, and we are involved in multiple ventures.

Our brands include Perceptograph, which belongs to my husband, along with ventures that we share. We also have Mother’s Recipe Catering Service, which belongs to both of us.

I am also the National President of Gurukul Educational Trust and represent the National Social Justice and Human Rights Commission. Through all these initiatives, our aim is to create a meaningful difference in society.

Q11. Finally, what is your message to Downtown Mirror Weekly readers?

Rinhee Suberwal. Believe in yourself, keep learning, remain consistent and never be afraid to take risks. Whether you are pursuing dance, healing, acting or any other creative profession, don’t put yourself in a box. Explore your potential, respect people around you, stay grounded and have faith in the divine.

Q1. What are the modalities you are into?

Pramod Kumar. I used to be a Merchant Navy Navigating Officer. Today, my wife and I run a dance academy together. Along with that, I lead a content creation business and also support my wife in running her other venture, an Astrology Consultancy business.

Q2. Choreography or healing modalities, which do you enjoy more and why?

Pramod Kumar. I love choreography because I feel it gives me a way to express myself. Every choreographer who is deeply involved in the art develops a unique style and swag of their own. For me, choreography feels very similar to dancing itself.

It is a state where you can become completely immersed and almost lose yourself in the moment. In a way, it feels meditative. It gives me a sense of peace and allows me to connect with myself.

Q3. What is the best part of being in the same or similar profession? What are the pros and cons?

Pramod Kumar. The biggest advantage is that both of our skills complement each other and often come in handy when we are working on a project together. We understand each other’s strengths, which makes collaboration easier.

The obvious challenge, however, is that we may sometimes have different opinions or face conflicts while making decisions.

But I believe that such differences are natural when two passionate people work together. What matters is how you communicate and resolve them.

Q4. What are your ambitions and dreams at this stage of your career?

Pramod Kumar. For me, your career or work should be something in which you can be completely involved, and that is possible only when you genuinely love what you do.

Whenever I perform on stage, I feel completely immersed in the experience. I believe a great performance has two important elements: dancing and becoming the character through acting.

While choreography is something I deeply enjoy, I also feel a strong pull towards acting. So, at this stage of my career, I would love to explore acting along with continuing my journey as a choreographer.

Q5. Your profession involves dealing with celebrities. How easy or difficult is it to deal with them?

Pramod Kumar. When working with celebrities as a choreographer, one needs to be considerate and respectful. They have reached their position through years of hard work and dedication in their respective fields.

At the same time, as a choreographer, you still have to take on the role of a teacher. This requires a humble approach and the ability to guide them without ever being disrespectful.

So, in some ways, working with celebrities can be challenging because you have to maintain a balance between being their teacher and respecting their stature.

On the other hand, it can also be easier in certain aspects because celebrities who are genuinely connected to their craft tend to have a deeper respect and understanding of art and the creative process.

Q6. What is the vision for your dance academy in Navi Mumbai?

Pramod Kumar. My vision for the academy is quite simple. For me, running a dance academy is not just about making children win reality shows or competitions. I want dance to become a part of everyone’s lifestyle.

Making a non-dancer dance and helping them experience the joy of movement would be far more fascinating to me than simply producing competition winners.

I want more and more people to learn dance because it brings joy and helps release the stress of everyday life. As I often say, dance is almost like meditation. The more you meditate, the more peaceful you tend to become.

Similarly, if more people learn to express themselves through dance and become calmer and more peaceful in their everyday lives, I believe we can contribute towards creating a better society.

Q7. Share two secrets of a happy marriage.

Pramod Kumar. I would say the two most important things are respectful behaviour towards each other and good communication.

Both partners should feel safe enough to express themselves without constantly worrying about how the other person might react.

Being able to communicate openly, honestly and respectfully creates a strong foundation for a healthy marriage.

Q8. What advice would you like to give newcomers who want to make a career in dance choreography?

Pramod Kumar. As awareness and interest in dance continue to grow, the number of dance choreographers will naturally increase as well. My advice would be to respect the art, respect your hard work, and never undervalue your skills.

You have invested your time, energy and effort into developing your craft, just as professionals in every other field have. If you charge very low prices simply to beat the competition, it can eventually create unhealthy pressure on the entire choreography community. At the same time, for those who are looking to hire choreographers, I would suggest that they look beyond just the price.

Please take the choreographer’s training, education, experience and overall academic background into consideration as well. You may notice a significant difference in the quality, discipline and approach towards the work.

Q9. What advice would you give to newcomers who want to become healers?

Pramod Kumar. Do not call yourself a “healer” simply because the title sounds appealing or because you have seen someone else doing it and thought it could be a great career. Being a healer comes with a responsibility towards the people you are trying to help.

For me, a healer is someone who has genuine empathy towards life and everything around them. Healing also requires you to work on yourself first. It takes time to understand and release your own past experiences and emotional baggage. You need to consistently work towards elevating your own state of being and maintaining a clean and balanced energy.

Before trying to heal others, work on your own body, mind and soul. Develop your own practices and rituals, and follow them consistently. The more you work on yourself, the better equipped you become to support others on their journey.

Q10. What is your philosophy of life?

Pramod Kumar. “Temet Nosce” means “Know Thyself.” No matter how much we try, we can never truly control other people or make them do what we believe is right or wrong. Our journey on this Earth is, in many ways, a journey of understanding ourselves.

I believe our purpose is to evolve into a higher-conscious being, someone who is aware of what is happening within them as well as around them. A self-aware person becomes conscious of what they are putting out into the world.

They can continuously observe, learn and recalibrate themselves so that their actions do not cause harm, whether verbally or physically, to other beings or to the planet. For me, knowing yourself is the beginning of understanding the world around you.

Q11. Finally, what is your message to Downtown Mirror Weekly readers?

Pramod Kumar. Let us heal ourselves by knowing ourselves, understanding ourselves and constantly working towards becoming better versions of who we are. Let us heal ourselves so that together we can heal the world and make it a better place.
