In this candid conversation, Nivaan Sen opens up about his journey as an actor, producer and filmmaker, sharing insights into his creative evolution, the lessons that have shaped him, and his vision for the road ahead.

Nivaan Sen on How Theatre Shaped His Creative Journey

Q1. You gained early recognition by winning Best Actor in Comedy at India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj. How has your background in performance and theatre shaped the creative standards and structural approach you bring to Urban Boat Films?

Nivaan Sen: I would say theatre is the spinal cord of an artist. Whether you are working in the foreground or behind the scenes, theatre gives you an understanding of the entire process of production and performance. However, there is a catch — filmmaking is an entirely different medium, and if you want to understand it specifically, you have to work in that medium just as you work in theatre.

Theatre has certainly given us immense support in understanding creativity, but our years of experience in the film industry have also helped us develop a strong understanding of content and filmmaking. That experience has contributed to projects like our earlier films and now our upcoming feature film, Avyaan.

Q2. Theatre relies heavily on continuous energy and character continuity, while film and television are much more fragmented. As an actor who transitioned into producing, which stage philosophies do you find most valuable when managing a film set?

Nivaan Sen: Continuity in films and web shows can certainly be challenging compared to theatre, where the flow is continuous. At UBF, we are very particular about these small but important aspects. We religiously follow our preparation and homework before going on set.

For us, preparation is extremely important. We take our time before stepping onto a set so that everyone understands what needs to be done.

Q3. Many producers approach scripts primarily through the text. How does your experience as an actor influence the way you read and evaluate a screenplay during development?

Nivaan Sen: At the outset, I would say that we strongly believe in homework and research. Without that, we never move ahead. It is a very important part of filmmaking.

My experience as an actor certainly helps me understand the process better. Being an actor gives you a different perspective on characters, performances and the overall filmmaking process, and that understanding becomes valuable during development.

Q4. Congratulations on wrapping production on Avyaan with producer Sunil Kothari. Can you give us an insight into the thematic core of the film and what drew you to the script?

Nivaan Sen: First of all, thank you so much. We would like to give credit to Sunil Kothari ji, who came to us with this creative idea. From there, the UBF team worked very hard to develop and build a strong script like Avyaan.

In India, very few filmmakers work in the anthology format, and we decided to explore it. We are confident that audiences will connect with and enjoy the story.

Q5. Urban Boat Films is also developing a new thriller. How can audiences expect this project to differ in terms of genre, tension and pacing from your previous work?

Nivaan Sen: Until now, UBF has explored several different stories, most of which have been social dramas. But as creative people, we don’t want to limit ourselves to one particular space.

We are ready to explore different genres, and that is exactly what we are working towards. The thriller is part of our effort to expand our creative horizon and experiment with different kinds of storytelling.

Q6. As a producer working alongside Neelu Mahadur Sen, how do you balance the creative, character-driven instincts of an actor with the logistical and financial demands of filmmaking?

Nivaan Sen: As I mentioned, we believe strongly in homework and research. So yes, there are challenges, but our experience in the film industry has helped us in many ways that are difficult to explain in words.

We have learned through experience that when your subject is strong, every department comes forward and contributes to making it happen. I must also say that Neelu ji is the backbone of UBF and plays a crucial role in making things happen.

Q7. Urban Boat Films places emphasis on honesty, substance and authentic human experiences rather than simply focusing on commercial metrics. How do you protect that vision while choosing writers and directors to collaborate with?

Nivaan Sen: We believe that films are destined for someone. We absolutely believe in God and destiny. Things move forward when the right people come together at the right time.

For us, finding the right creative people and allowing the story to take its course is an important part of the filmmaking journey.

Q8. You have also spent considerable time engaging with the international entertainment landscape, including places such as Bangkok. Is Urban Boat Films looking at cross-border cinema or international co-productions in the future?

Nivaan Sen: Absolutely. Avyaan is also an international project. Initially, we were planning to shoot it across different countries and cities, but due to strict budget limitations, we had to limit the locations.

That said, we are definitely in the process of developing more national and international films and series. We want UBF to explore stories that can travel beyond geographical boundaries.

Q9. When audiences look back at the Urban Boat Films catalogue a decade from now, what kind of storytelling or creative identity would you like the company to be remembered for?

Nivaan Sen: Honestly, we don’t know what the next decade will bring. But what we do know is that we are working genuinely hard to produce interesting stories that can entertain audiences while also connecting with society.

We want to continue telling stories with sincerity and creating content that people can engage with. That is what we are working towards right now.
